Kefir

I love this stuff! Kefir is a delicious cultured milk drink similar to yogurt, but said to be even more nutritious and easily digestible. Any grocery store that carries organic dairy products probably has at least one brand of kefir available and a serious health food store may have several different kinds as well as packets of dried starter culture to mix with milk and make your own. The absolute very best superfood - kind you can only make with the live grains, and if you want to get into all that then check the links below.

Plain kefir mixed with fruit juice makes an incredibly easy breakfast drink - one part juice to two parts kefir, stir and drink - no blender required. It's also fantastic as a salad dressing mixed with salt and pepper and whatever herbs you like. For more kefir recipes click here.

If you are already a fan and interested in making your own kefir with a live culture click here for some easy instructions.

If you're looking for a source to order kefir grains click here for a great community of kefir enthusiasts, any of whom will send you some live grains to get started. I was able to order some from a couple in Thorn Hill, Tennessee. The grains arrived intact a few days later and are currently working away in a glass jar on my kitchen counter.

The other cool thing about making your own is that the grains live forever and multiply, so pretty soon you're sharing the extras with friends and family. Sort of like a sourdough starter but way simpler.

Do you have recipes or kefir experiences to share?
